AFTER THE BATTLE THE MISSION GOES ON (Panel 18)

ITALFOR – IBIS II

ITALFOR – IBIS II started on May 4th 1993 and continued until March 21st 1994, when the Italian contingent was evacuated.

Until September 6th 1993, the land component of ITALFOR - IBIS II, resized to brigade level, revolved around the "FOLGORE" Airborne Brigade.

With the rotation by the "LEGNANO" Mechanized Brigade and the assumption of command of B. Gen. Carmine Fiore, ITALFOR was reorganized into 3 regiments of the "LEGNANO", "FRIULI" and "FOLGORE" Brigades. Other units of Arms, Corps and Army Specialties were added.

ITALFOR – IBIS II ensured the control and security of ¾ of Mogadishu and the Via Imperiale. The activity, following the UN mandate, was aimed at continuing humanitarian assistance and restoring peace. As a result of the events of June-July 1993, IBIS II changed from a peace-support mission to a peace-enforcing one. During IBIS II, the Italian military sustained clashes and battles that caused losses to the contingent: July 2nd 1993, Check Point "Pasta";

September 15th, 1993, Port of Mogadishu;

October 9th, 1993, Belet Weine;

October 23rd, 1993, Afghoi;

February 6th, 1994, Balad.

Between January 10th and March 21st 1994, the gradual withdrawal of ITALFOR – IBIS II began.
On April 5th, the last Italian units moved back to home country.
